Custom Bike Builds

2020 - Present

It is a passion of mine to try and spend as much time outside as possible, and often the best way for me to do that would be to ditch the car and opt for bike commuting. Living in the city pushed me to ride a simple and reliable bike so I embraced the fixie lifestyle. For those of you unaware, fixed-gear bikes have a single speed and are unable to coast. Both my bikes undergo regular maintenance done by myself including but not limited to cleaning the chain, tuning the brakes, and trueing the wheels. Read below for the build stories of my two bikes.

Raw Finish Daily

This bike was found on craigslist and was clearly in need of some TLC, but the components on it were too impressive to pass up. The frame was covered in a concerning amount of surface rust. This was remedied by removing every component so that the frame could be hand sanded. Once that was done I had a lengthy internal debate on what color to paint it, but I fell in love with the raw look and simply applied a clear coat to prevent further rusting. Every three or so months the bike receives a wipe down with Penetrol to further prevent rust. Once the frame was ready to be ridden again all the components were placed back on the bike, with a new chain, brake pads, saddle, and pedals with foot straps.

Grocery Getter

Another Craigslist find, this bike began its life with me by being stripped of its dropped handlebars in place for a comfier set of risers. This process required new brake levers and cables which I learned to cut, crimp, and mount myself. Next modification was the removal of the unfavorable decals which immediately improved the bike's aesthetics. Next, toe clips were added to improve pedaling performance. Lastly, a basket was custom mounted using a 3D printed brace so that this bike could be regularly used for quick grocery runs.
